Ireland IRELAND 46 - 24 ARGENTINA Argentina

Aviva Stadium - Saturday 24 November 2012
KO: 14:00 HT: 24-9 Att: 43,406

Ireland ArgentinaCRAIG GILROY made a stunning debut as Ireland took down Argentina in style at the Aviva Stadium.

It was a shaky start for the homeside with Sexton kicking straight out at kick-off and giving away an early penalty opportunity. However, Nicolás Sánchez missed his chance to put Argentina on the scoreboard and Gilroy danced his way through the visitors’ defence to touchdown. The newcomer could not have announced his arrival in any better fashion. Jonathan Sexton, who had a fairly turbulent performance overall, added the extras and Ireland grew in confidence.

The Pumas responded with a penalty, with Sanchez hitting his target this time around. But this closed the gap only momentarily as Sexton found space and swooped in for another converted try.

Sanchez knocked over a further 3 points soon after but it was clear that Ireland were the dominant force, Keith Earls unfortunate to not add to their tally as a chip ball bounced unkindly for him. The Argentinian fly-half was then taken off for concussion assessment but was deemed fit to continue.

Meanwhile, Ireland grabbed more points as Richardt Strauss forced his way over the whitewash and the TMO confirmed. Sexton missed the extras and the Pumas had a surge into Irish territory. However, the homeside held them off and the most that could be gleaned from the attack was another 3 points.

Again Ireland pushed up and found the Argentine defence wanting, Simon Zebo crossing after some brilliant open play by Sexton and Tommy Bowe. Sexton’s conversion rebounded off the woodwork but it did not really matter at this point.

The Pumas just could not handle the Irish, and Sanchez brought an end to the dismal half with a missed penalty, leaving the visitors 24-9 down at the break.

At the restart, the visitors returned with renewed force and managed to collect another penalty, thanks to the boot of Sanchez, within 2 minutes. This was swiftly nullified by Sexton though and soon the match returned to being an Irish affair.

Ireland Argentina

Sexton chipped through and Tommy Bowe dashed to claim the ball, gathering and dotting down for yet more points for the homeside’s tally. As Sexton teed up but failed to make the conversion, the Pumas tried to assemble their thoughts but they had little time to do so. Sexton came roaring through their lines and grabbed his second try before adding the tricky conversion.

It was after all this that the Pumas finally awoke. They began to push into Irish territory and had several strong opportunities; however, the moment was soured by Maximiliano Bustos being sent to the bin after hurling the ball at Irish players in a petulant strop when they were handed possession via the referee.

This did not stop the Argentinians from one last burst to make the scoreline a bit more respectable, Tomás Leonardi and Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe both seeking out the tryline in quick succession. However, the final conversion attempt summed up the feelings of the Pumas, exasperated and tired, the ball barely reached the posts.

Italy ITALY 19 - 22 AUSTRALIAAustralia

Stadio Artemio Franchi, Florence - Saturday 24 November 2012
KO: 15:00 HT: 6-22

Italy AustraliaTHE Qantas Wallabies held off an inspired Italy to escape with a narrow 3-point victory in Florence. The visitors made all the running in the first half going into the break leading by 16 points, however it was a very different story in the second half with the home side scoring 13 points to nothing nearly snatch victory in the dying stages.

While the second half will be 40 minutes to forget for the Wallabies, the first half was certainly the opposite with the tourists securing five penalty goals and a converted try in the opening 40 minutes.

The Italians were the first to trouble the scoreboard in the fifth minute when fly half, Luciano Orquera, kicked truly for his sides first of two opening half penalty goals.

The Wallabies hit straight back two minutes later through the boot of fullback, Berrick Barnes. The Australians went further ahead in the 16th minute thanks again to the boot of Barnes who kicked his second penalty goal for the half after some tough work by the forwards.

Three minutes later after a sensational chase by Wallabies flanker, Michael Hooper, the Australians spun the ball wide and provided winger, Nick Cummins with his second Test try in as many matches. Barnes added the extras and extended the Qantas Wallabies lead to 10 points.

In the 25th minute the Wallabies added a further 3 points from the boot of Barnes, which was quickly followed by another 3 just two minutes later thanks to fly half, Kurtley Beale’s first penalty goal of the half. Beale added another 3 points five minutes later to give the Australians even more breathing space, stretching the score to 22-3.

The Italians weren’t to be denied and after building pressure on the Australian defence finally secured the second penalty goal of the half in the 34th minute, taking the half time score to 6-22.

Italy Australia

The Italians came out firing in the second half and made the best possible start, capitalising on some sloppy play by the Wallabies.

Italy flanker, Robert Barbieri, pounced on a loose pass to cross for his side’s first try of the match in the 41st minute, cutting the Qantas Wallabies lead to just 11 points. When Italy fly half, Luciano Oquera added the extras the visitors lead was just 9 points.

The Italians continued to apply pressure on the Wallabies through the weight of possession and in the 50th minute, cut their lead by a further 3 points thanks to a penalty goal to fly half, Luciano Oquera.

Five minutes later and the Wallabies lead was just 3, after the trusty boot of Oquera kicked his fourth penalty goal of the Test.

With 25 minutes left on the clock the Italians continued to apply pressure on the Australians and despite a number of forays inside the visitors 22 failed to add any additional points.

Unable to gain any momentum the Wallabies struggled to vacate their own half and with just one minute left on the clock the Italians secured a penalty 40 metres out in the middle of the field.

With the opportunity to tie the match at 22-points apiece, Orquera stepped up to take the penalty goal, however for the first time in the match his trusty boot pushed it wide, allowing the Wallabies to relieve the pressure.

As the clock wound down the Australians won the ball back and after one last thrust at the Italians line, kicked the ball dead to record a nail-biting 22-19 victory taking their Spring Tour record to two wins and one loss with one game remaining.

France FRANCE 22 - 14 SAMOA Samoa

Stade de France - Saturday 24 November 2012
KO: 18:00 HT: 10-7 Att: 36,500

France SamoaFRANCE found Samoa to be a far tougher opponent than expected and the visitors proved that their performance against Wales was not a one off.

France showed glimmers of hope but poor handling and sloppy play cost them, allowing Samoa to draw first blood, but Samoa’s Johnny Leota was an early casualty of the match, being replaced after just 2 minutes of play. Tusi Pisi made the initial break before David Lemi managed to dart over the whitewash. Tusi Pisi added the extras and it was clear that Samoa meant business.

France responded perfectly though with Michalak charging down a Samoan clearance kick and bolting for the tryline for a converted score. The next 15 minutes were a tussle between the sides, both showing promise as France charged down another kick and Samoa made some impressive runs. However, finally France hauled themselves into the lead as Parra slotted a penalty, making amends for one he had missed just moments before.

Samoa continued to trouble the French defence, Maxime Mermoz taking a nasty knock in a tackle as the visitors pushed forward, but they could not finish their moves. So with everything to play for the two teams trekked into the changing rooms with the score remaining 10-7 at the break.

France Samoa

The second half began similarly to the first, with Samoa taking the initiative and the lead. The visitors barged their way up to the 5m and kept grinding their way forward with pick and drives until finally the French defence allowed Joe Tekori to contact the ball with the upright. Once again Pisi added the extras and it was up to Les Bleus to reply with positive play.

More poor passing and huge hits caused problems for both sides but eventually it was the Samoan discipline that cracked. Michalak was handed five penalties in the final quarter of the match and knocked over four successfully. The frustration of the Samoans was clear to see with several high tackles sneaking into their play, and even a maul which saw a French player being seemingly strangled. It was a disappointing end for the visitors who had done so well throughout in terms of a solid defence.

But the French know how to turn up the heat when it matters and this was enough to leave Samoa with nothing for all their hard work. Nonetheless, Samoa will walk away from this Autumn Tour with their heads held high; they have proved that they are no longer the easy draw for matches.
